Each of the continental unions has spent recent weeks making final preparations for their respective continental championships. 700 very important points for each gold medallist will be the target for some but for others it’s all about the honour of being a champion, a champion in possession of one of the five Olympic rings, the other four at stake in Paris this summer.

The Asian Championships, this year staged in Hong Kong, has just ended and the results may not be as predictable as some think. There has been strategic planning by coaches, deciding who should enter and who should conserve their fighting energy for days further down the line. Weighing up the risk versus the reward, the peak versus the recovery balance, those have been primary thoughts leading directly into the registrations for each respective event.
