From this huge cohort, 18 nations saw their flag hoisted above the podium, Georgia hearing their national anthem most frequently. New Greek cadets were also among the medallists, an indication that the home-ground effect was working its magic

The value of these age-banded events continues to be clear, with cadets from all over the world travelling to collect experiences, knowledge and contacts, learning the ropes for their senior futures.

President of the Hellenic Judo Federation, Alexandros Sampris, said, “It is very important that the European Judo Union trusts us with this competition. Promising athetes of Greek and world judo are competing on this stage. It is an opportunity to inspire Greek children regarding judo. We hope that this tournament will become an institution for Thessaloniki."

Organising such a well attended event is not easy but the local organisers, with support from the continental union, did a fantastic job of ensuring a smooth competition could be enjoyed by all. It was a great success and a perfect way to end the cadet year.
