In scores of countries around the world, football fever is a well-established phenomenon. Crowds gather hours before matches begin and remain in the local area for hours after matches are finished. There is high emotion, a significant social aspect to it all and also a clear sense of national or team-based identity.

This fever is growing in judo. Stars of the sport are beginning to need special arrangements to manage their preparation phases so as not to be disturbed at the wrong time by fans wanting to say hello and take photos. Our stars remain accessible and generous but in Tajikistan there is a clear surge of energy, a fan-base that is growing month on month.

In 2023 the World Judo Tour pegged its lines in the Tajik capital for the first time, brining a grand prix and a world of high level judo to Dushanbe. The crowds came and cheered and there was a buzz around the city. This year it has grown and with its upgraded status, the Dushanbe Grand Slam has attracted more stars of the judo world and with that came more supporters.

Teddy is here, Wagner is here, Klimkait is here; world champions understanding the value of this event and bringing their best judo to Tajikistan ahead of the Abu Dhabi World Championships at the end of the month. The spectators have responded loudly, the arena full before the first contests are even lined up in the tunnel. They have drums and applause for all good judo, regardless of origin; they just love the spectacle.

France experiences a version of judo fever whenever their biggest stars are out. In Brazil the social media coverage is outstanding and so their most successful champions are known and applauded everywhere and now with the advent of JudoTV, there is the highest level of judo available to everyone, in every home, at any time. What Tajikistan is creating though, at the events and in the city way beyond the arena, is really special. More of this please!
