Led by Dr Slavisa Bradic, IJF Academy Education Director, alongside Olympic and world champion Tina Trstenjak, the festival combined classroom-style learning with hands-on practice. Coaches were introduced to the principles of Nage-no-kata, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical instruction.
“The purpose of this festival was not only to promote kata but also to give coaches the tools to make it enjoyable for children,” explained Dr Bradic. “Kata is about understanding the essence of judo and through it coaches can pass on fundamental techniques in a way that inspires the next generation.”
After the seminar sessions, the theory was put into practice. More than 80 children took to the tatami, giving coaches the chance to test out what they had learned immediately. For many young participants, it was their first encounter with kata. "The children really enjoyed the session; it was wonderful to see how quickly they responded to the methods and how motivated the coaches were to apply them,” added Dr Bradic.
The day ended with a demonstration of kata by the participants. Parents and coaches watched proudly as the children showcased their new skills. Certificates and small gifts were presented to mark the occasion, ensuring the festival closed on a celebratory note.
Kata’s journey in Azerbaijan began relatively recently, launching only a few years ago through the IJF Academy. Thanks to the support and vision of the federation, it has become an essential part of Azerbaijan’s coach education progrsmmes. The country now boasts both an active kata commission and a competitive kata team, reflecting a growing commitment to this important aspect of judo.
Kata is no longer seen as an optional extra. It is now part of the fabric of the education system for coaches, and the federation believes its value for children is immeasurable. By introducing kata to children in an accessible and educational way, Azerbaijan is building a strong future for the discipline. The success of the Kata for All festival is proof of the progress already made and a sign of the bright path ahead.
