Bosnia and Herzegovina Judo Federation President Mr Ognjen Pavlović welcomed the delegations on behalf of the organisers. “Today our country hosts the best veteran judoka in the world. Through these championships, we send a message of longevity to our athletes. Judo is far more than a sport, both on and off the tatami.”
Mr Pavlović underlined the inspiration provided by the champions gathered in Sarajevo, who continue to demonstrate that dedication to judo does not end with a senior career. “We are very proud to welcome all these champions who are an inspiration for the next generation,” he added, wishing all competitors fair play, a successful competition and an enjoyable stay in the country.
Balkan Judo Association President Mr Branislav Crnogorac then addressed the judoka and coaches. He thanked them for travelling to Sarajevo and recalled the strong sporting tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the federation’s experience in hosting European and world level events.
He also expressed his gratitude to IJF President Mr Marius Vizer and emphasised the place of judo within the country’s sporting landscape. “Judo in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first Olympic sport,” he said. “Age is only a number. Judo is for everyone. It is a way of life.”
The official event opening was delivered by Mr Denis Weisser, head of the IJF Veterans Commission. Speaking on behalf of the International Judo Federation, its president, the IJF Executive Committee and the IJF Veterans Commission, he welcomed all participants to Sarajevo and praised the city’s hospitality.
“It is fantastic that we can spend time in this amazing city and enjoy such hospitality,” said Weisser. “Let us celebrate the values of our sport. I am very happy to be here to enjoy the competition. Many thanks to everyone involved.”
With the national anthem of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the IJF anthem completing the ceremony, Mr Weisser declared the 2026 World Veteran Championships open.
