The Zanzibar Judo Association, a member of the Judo Association of Tanzania, has officially inaugurated its new state-of-the-art dojo at the New Amaan Complex sports facility, marking a major milestone for the sport in the area. The opening was celebrated with a children’s club competition, symbolising the beginning of a new era for judo in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of the United Republic of Tanzania, is renowned for its cultural heritage and vibrant sporting spirit. Therefore the Zanzibar Judo Association plays a central role in the growth of judo on the islands.

From Humble Beginnings to Modern Facilities

Zanzibar built its first dojo in 2002 with support from the Japanese Embassy, Expo Osaka70, Daiken Co. Ltd, the Zanzibar Sports Education Development Organisation and the Zanzibar government. In 2023, as part of a local government initiative to modernise sport infrastructure, the old dojo was demolished to make way for a new hall. Now completed, the facility offers modern equipment and a spacious environment designed to support both training and competition.

The association’s vision for the new dojo includes:

  • Regular classes for all ages and levels.
  • Hosting competitions, exhibitions and community events.
  • Partnerships with schools to introduce judo into physical education programmes.
  • Collaboration with Japan for cultural and training exchanges.
  • Promoting judo’s values of respect, discipline and perseverance.
  • Developing tourism potential through regional and international tournaments.

“The construction of this modern dojo is a significant investment in sport. It will enhance training, foster community engagement and promote cultural exchange,” said Muhamad Juma, Secretary General of Zanzibar Judo.

Judo Today in Zanzibar counts 7 clubs (4 community-based and 3 in the armed forces) and 377 registered judoka.

Looking ahead, the association hopes to reinforce its links with the international judo community to widen access to judo in Zanzibar. Locally, it aims to expand youth programmes, improve coaching, ensure inclusivity and build long-term sustainability through sponsorship and fundraising.

“Our mission is to promote judo, develop athletes, ensure safety and inclusivity, and strive for growth that benefits both sport and society,” added Juma.
