Nadia Comăneci is one of the greatest legends in the history of gymnastics and world sport. The Romanian icon became the first gymnast to receive a perfect 10.0 at the Olympic Games, in Montréal in 1976, before completing an extraordinary Olympic career that included five gold medals. For many years, she has also been a committed Ambassador of the International Judo Federation.

As the 2026 Baku World Championships brings together the finest judoka on the planet, Nadia Comăneci wished to address a message to all those taking part. Coming from an athlete whose achievements and influence have inspired generations, her words carry a resonance that reaches far beyond the competition itself.

“As an IJF Ambassador and an athlete, I know that great performances are built through discipline, courage and determination. To all the athletes here competing in Baku, compete with pride, respect your opponent and give your best on the tatami. Medals are remembered but so is character and the inspiration we leave to the next generation. Wishing you all an unforgettable world championship.”

Her message reflects the very essence of judo: the search for excellence, certainly, but also the respect, humility and responsibility that give sporting achievement its deepest meaning.
