Felice Mariani made history at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, where he won bronze and became the first Italian judoka to claim an Olympic medal. He also won three world championship bronze medals. After retiring from competing, he coached the Italian national team and helped guide Giulia Quintavalle to Olympic gold at the Beijing 2008 Games.

Reflecting on the honour, Mariani said, “It feel a great satisfaction and I would like to thank President Vizer for this wonderful opportunity. To be included among such distinguished figures from sport and public life is an honour and a real pleasure. Joining this great family makes this an historic day, one I will remember for ever.”

He added that the occasion was made even more special by Al Bano’s performance, saying the singer “brings Italy to the world and allows our language to be heard in such a prestigious international setting”.

With this appointment, the IJF recognises not only Mariani’s achievements on the tatami and as a coach, but also his continuing contribution to the promotion of judo.
