In a candid episode of JudoPod, Olympic bronze, world silver medallist, and five-time European champion reveals the mindset behind her success, the burnout that nearly derailed her career and why she believes the secret to longevity is never forgetting how to enjoy the sport.
Boukli describes competition as activating a completely different version of herself, an "alter ego" she has developed over years of elite competition. Before and during fights, she uses constant self-talk to sharpen her focus and fuel the aggression needed to succeed in one of the world's toughest sports.
That competitive fire was forged early. Growing up, she trained with her father and challenged him constantly, desperate to prove she was better. His tough-love approach taught her an important lesson: losing hurts, but dwelling on it changes nothing. The resilience she developed as a child remains one of her greatest strengths today. Yet even champions can lose their connection to the sport.
Following the Olympic Games, Boukli found herself struggling mentally and physically. Training sessions felt empty, motivation disappeared and she began questioning why she was even on the tatami. Rather than forcing her way through the burnout, she stepped away from the elite environment and started again, as a beginner in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Training alongside teenagers at a regional centre, free from expectations and pressure, helped her rediscover something she had lost: the simple joy of learning. By the time she returned to international competition, the passion was back.
That renewed mindset was tested during her fifth European title run. In a gruelling golden score final, Boukli stuck to her tactical plan stubbornly, controlling the gripping exchanges and refusing to abandon her strategy. The victory eventually came via penalties rather than a decisive throw. Most athletes would have celebrated. Boukli left the mat frustrated. A self-confessed perfectionist, she measures success not just by winning, but by how she wins. Even after equalling the French record with five European titles, she felt she could have performed better.
Away from judo, Boukli is building a life that extends well beyond sport. Just one day after returning from the European Championships, she completed her degree in international management. She is also passionate about fashion and beauty, partnering with major brands while embracing a side of herself that contrasts sharply with the intensity of combat sport.
Her discipline extends to her faith as well. During Ramadan, she continues to train twice a day while fasting, carefully managing nutrition, recovery and performance to compete at the highest level.
Throughout the interview, one message stands out above all others. Despite the medals, pressure and expectations, Boukli believes athletes should never lose sight of why they started. Sport, she says, should still feel like play.
