Sierra Leone's National Children’s Judo Training Camp, part of the Judo in Schools initiative, held from December 2024 to May 2025, has concluded successfully, showcasing the remarkable spirit and commitment of young athletes across the country. Supported by the International Judo Federation and the Sierra Leone Judo Association (SLJA), the camp brought together hundreds of children aged 6 to 13, emphasising both skill development and the core values of judo.

The six-month training programme was designed to nurture young talent and promote the sport within schools and among non-school children in various regions. Every weekend, the SLJA organised a two-day training camp, at which children could train together, share experiences and build camaraderie. The support of six dedicated volunteer judo coaches was instrumental in guiding the young athletes, ensuring high quality instruction and mentorship throughout the programme.

In addition to coaching, the SLJA provided essential resources, including food, transportation and drinks, ensuring all participants had their basic needs met. For many children travelling from distant cities and regions, accommodation was also arranged, allowing them to focus fully on their training without commuting concerns.

The culmination of the training camp was a celebration of the children’s achievements and growth over the six months. Participants showcased their new-found skills in a series of friendly competitions and were acknowledged for their hard work and dedication to the sport.

The SLJA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the president and entire staff of the International Judo Federation and the technical team of the Sierra Leone Judo Association. Their unwavering support and commitment have been vital to the success of this initiative.

Looking ahead, the SLJA is excited to announce that the next training camp will begin in October 2025. This will help foster the development of judo in Sierra Leone and empower the next generation of athletes.

As the spirit of judo continues to grow across the nation, the foundation laid during this camp will undoubtedly inspire and influence many young lives for years to come.
