-70 kg: Pohl is in Pole Position in Peru

Final: Nauana Silva (BRA) vs Dena Pool (GER)

Dena Pohl is always strong at the hips and Nauana Silva fell foul of that in the first minute of their final. She attacked with her own hip technique but with a moment of hesitation and so Pohl wasted no time in countering, forward, for a waza-ari. Silva was lucky not to be held down too, escaping to give herself the chance to fight back.

Pohl maintained the upper hand and added a yuko to her tally as soon as the referee called “Hajime” again. Silva had her work cut out. She never stopped working for her chance but Pohl’s defences were too controlled and so the gold would be heading to Germany with her. This is Dena Pohl’s first World Judo Tour gold.

Dena Pohl’s reaction was exuberant, “Winning feels amazing! I didn't expect it today because of our heavy training camp beforehand but I did my best. I'm hoping to make the world championship team when selections are decided after the summer.

The final against the Brazilian athlete was really tough. She's physically strong and fast. When she launched those big attacks with 30 seconds left, I panicked for a second, but my coach shouted to stay calm as she was the one under pressure. He was right!”

Bronze medal contest: Serafima Moscalu (ROU) vs Irene Pedrotti (ITA)

Throughout this four and a half minute battle, the two judoka gave all they had, drawing on all reserves of power and resilience. With many attacks not well prepared enough but all with physical presence, this was a draining match that demanded enormous willpower from both.

As they approached the golden score period, it became clear that the end was just around the corner and it was Serafima Moscalu who broke through the stalemate to score an all-important yuko in extra time.

Bronze medal contest: Jijeong Kim (KOR) vs Giorgia Stangherlin (ITA)

With an Italian in each of the bronze medal contests, the domestic rivalry was already becoming intense.Pedrotti and Stangherlin are all too aware that every point is important in the race to Los Angeles. Stangherlin found herself with an opportunity to improve her ranking after her teammate was defeated moments before her own final block contest. Would that be pressure or power for Stangherlin?

The answer came comprehensively. Stangherlin made space for an o-uchi-gari to earn the winning score of the contest and in doing so she also found herself a place on the podium in Peru.
