The first day of the 40th CISM World Military Judo Championships ended, in Brétigny-sur-Orge, with a very positive outcome for the medal-winning athletes on the one hand and for the event organisers on the other hand.

Colonel Stefan Marginean, Head of the IJF Military Commission, representing the International Judo Federation on site, had much to be satisfied with, "First of all I must underline the very smooth organisation of this 40th World Championship, which received not only the support of the military authorities, of course, but also benefited from strong support from the French civil authorities and from the mayor of the city of Brétigny-sur-Orge, as well as from France Judo (French Federation). This is a great indicator of success.

Today we witnessed a very strong competition, the level of which was very high. Many of the athletes entered are also regulars on the World Judo Tour and it is not surprising therefore that the level of this championship is so good."

For Stefan Marginean the explanation is clear, "For many years, first as the CISM Sports Director and then as Head of the IJF Military Commission, I insisted on convincing the member states of the CISM of the importance of judo. This sport is an ideal tool for the preparation and training of the armed forces. It is also a tool for development and an arena in which the athletes can shine.

Today the level of this championship is strong because we have succeeded in inviting the member countries to bring their highest level athletes into the armed forces. France is a good example but I could also mention Brazil and so many other countries in which top athletes have contracts in the army. It also helps them to pursue their global judo career."

The synergy between local, national and international organisers and the presence of some big names of the sport, guarantee the spectacle. "Once again I would like to underline the great professionalism of the organisers here in France. French judo is recognised worldwide as much for its ability to organise big events as for its results. Here we have the combination of the two," concluded Stefan Marginean.

On Sunday 31st October the change to winter time will not disrupt the competition and once again we expect spectacle, emotion, respect and beautiful judo.
