What better way to open the weekend than with a first day of competition? This is what we were treated to today, during the Tashkent Grand Slam 2024. This event, which has become a must on the international calendar, takes on an even more scintillating air this year than usual, since the two major events of the season, the world championships and the Olympics Games, are on the horizon and it is time for athletes around the world to fine-tune their preparation.

Since the beginning of the year, we have not been bored for a single second, as the spectacle offered by judoka eager to performance has filled our view. This was again the case here in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in a judo city and judo country.

Throughout the day, the contests continued at a frantic pace, in the first five categories entered, those of the lightweights. At -48 kg it all started with a surprise elimination of the number one seed, the Italian Assunta Scutto. At -60 kg, things went better for top seed Giorgi Sardalashvili (GEO). In the -52 kg category Amandine Buchard, who had skipped the Paris Grand Slam, is gradually making a comeback. There is still work to be done but we feel that the Frenchwoman is gaining momentum towards this summer.

At -66 kg, we saw favourites disappear and outsiders who were once favorites come back to the forefront. The -57kg also reserved their share of surprises, to our greatest pleasure and that of fans around the world. This back and forth is part of the sport. It is its very essence and that is why we love following the World Judo Tour.

Starting tomorrow, we will open a new page with four new categories. Follow all the action on https://judotv.com/
