Invited by Pierre de Coubertin to sit on the International Olympic Committee in 1909, Jigorô Kanô quickly became the central figure in the history of sport in Japan. The inclusion of judo in the programme of the 1940 Olympic Games reflects the success of the method he founded. What similarities and contrasts can we pinpoint between the philosophical concepts of these two great apostles of physical exercise?

By what means and under what influences was the martial art transformed into a modern sport? The 'Judo and Olympism' conference examines the facts and the roles of the actors. It highlights the drivers of evolution which have given judo a place of choice in the current Olympic programme.
