As the fourth and final day of the World Championships Juniors 2025 arrives, all eyes will turn to the mixed team event where the question looms: can anyone stop Japan?

The mixed team format brings with it a mix of energy, national pride and constant surprises as three men and three women per national team take to the tatami for the right to be crowned mixed team champions.

Since the first edition of the mixed team event at the 2017 World Championships Juniors in Zagreb, Japan has taken the gold medal at every edition of the event in which they have taken part.

In 2024, the mixed teams podium read:

  • 1. Japan
  • 2. France
  • 3. Republic of Korea
  • 3. Uzbekistan

The individual competition in Lima has shown Japanese supremacy once again, firmly leading the medal table with strong performances throughout. However, the number 1 seed and current junior European champions, team France, rise to the occasion of the mixed team format perennially and have remarkable depth across light and heavy categories.

While unable to stand atop the podium over the opening days of the individual categories in Lima, Uzbekistan will be motivated to chase Japan and continue their strong run of cadet and junior success in 2025.

Thus far in Lima, Brazil has showcased its renowned consistency and will be confident they can threaten the podium in the mixed team event. An event which is never short of surprises, contenders for the final in Lima are present among the current European medallists Turkiye and the International Judo Federation (IJF) delegation.
