Amidst the Caribbean splendour of Varadero, Cuba, the thrilling second Pan American Judo Carnival took place, marking the beginning of the 2024 calendar for the Panamerican Judo Confederation. This vibrant gathering included cadet and junior Pan-American cups, a Pan-American open, which awarded points for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualification, and the Ronaldo Veitia Cup, in memory of the iconic Cuban coach.

Among the competitors, the presence of Katarzyna Sobierajska stood out, a 22-year-old Polish representative in the -70 kg category, who secured the gold medal in the Varadero Pan American Open. For Sobierajska, this victory marked her first medal in a continental open event. Despite the challenges she faced, including surgery the previous year, Sobierajska and her coach, Damian Lisiewicz, travelled over 8,500 kilometres in search of this competition opportunity. "We were looking for competition after my surgery and this event was a great moment for me," highlighted the Polish athlete with a smile.

Speaking about her experience at the event, Sobierajska praised the venue, organisation and food, highlighting the beauty of Varadero and the quality of the tournament. "The place is good and the view is beautiful. The organisation is good too," she expressed joyfully. Additionally, she shared her thoughts on fulfilling expectations, "I came here for the gold medal and I got one, so I'm really happy and content. I hope to come back next year and I definitely recommend this event."

The family atmosphere was a highlighted aspect of the event, with the stands of the Meliá Internacional Hotel filled with parents supporting their athletes. The presence and support of parents are fundamental for the development of judo in the region and for the Pan-American Judo Confederation, as evidenced by the case of Héctor Sandoval and Karina Ramírez from Mexico, who enjoyed the success of their daughter Renata Sandoval at the junior Pan American cup.

For Héctor and Karina, the thrill of seeing their daughter compete in an international event made every sacrifice worthwhile. "Every sacrifice is worth it. Seeing her there and seeing her face pays everything off," commented the proud father of the bronze medallist, with excitement. Additionally, he praised the Cuban hospitality and Varadero facilities, describing the place as a true paradise.
