Judo at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 was a showcase of skills and passion. Over four intense days, from 28th to 31st October, the Combat Centre of the National Stadium in the Chilean capital became the epicentre of our sport in Pan America's largest multidisciplinary event. The Pan American Games, organised by Panam Sports, brings together over 30 sports and representatives from more than 45 countries in the region.

A total of 20 countries sent 148 athletes seeking to achieve Pan American glory. The event's organisation was impeccable and the fans' enthusiasm filled the stands of the Combat Sports Centre, creating an atmosphere full of emotion and support for the competitors. The fact that tickets were completely sold out is a testament to the success that judo achieved.

The competition proved to be a golden bridge between the Junior Pan American Games Cali 2021 and Santiago 2023. Thus in 2021, gold medallists earned a direct pass to compete in Santiago 2023. Three of the gold medallists this year were also crowned in Cali 2021: Willis García from Venezuela at -66kg, from Brazil at -73kg and Alexia Nascimento from Brazil at -48kg.

Idalys Ortiz

One of the most exciting and memorable moments at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 was the performance of Idalys Ortiz (CUB), a true judo legend. To talk about Idalys Ortiz is to speak of one of the greatest champions, not only in Pan America but globally. In Santiago 2023, Idalys secured her fourth gold medal at a Pan American Games, matching the record of another outstanding Cuban judoka, Driulis González. Idalys Ortiz has already won gold medals in Guadalajara 2011, Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019. Her legacy in Pan American judo is undeniable, undoubtedly standing out as one of the greatest athletes in the history of the Pan American Games.

Another aspect that marked a milestone in the history of judo at the Pan American Games was the inclusion of the mixed team competition. For the first time, this exciting format was in play and designated the first mixed team champions in the history of the Pan American Games.

In the individual competition medal table, Brazil dominated with 7 gold, followed by Cuba with 5 gold and Canada in third place with 1 gold medal.
