For several weeks, the rhythm of the World Judo Tour has carried us through fourteen weight categories at each stop, with their share of triumphs, disappointments and unforgettable stories. There were, of course, the frustrations of those who could not shine as they had hoped, such is the nature of elite sport. Above all, there were moments of brilliance that reminded us why we love judo!
Only yesterday, on the second day of competition, we witnessed the return to glory of Hidayat Heydarov (AZE). After an early exit in Lima, the reigning Olympic champion responded in the best possible way, winning gold in Guadalajara and rediscovering his champion’s spirit. The day before, it was Amandine Buchard (FRA) who, in only her second outing at -57 kg, claimed victory; just a week after taking silver in Peru. What a statement of intent! These are just two among many inspiring stories.
The twin events of Lima and Guadalajara also marked the strong return of the highest level of judo to Pan American soil, a vital step ahead of the next Olympic Games, which will also be hosted on this continent. Across these two events, the Pan American nations flew their flags proudly. Brazil, naturally, stood out as one of the sport’s global powerhouses, but there was also Mary Dee Vargas Ley (CHI), who captured two medals, including gold in Lima, as well as a series of fine performances from judoka representing Peru, the United States, Ecuador and Colombia.
With its rich and world-renowned culture, Mexico proved to be a remarkable host. Athletes and officials alike will leave with the sound of mariachis still echoing in their minds and with the feeling of having experienced something truly special.
In the coming weeks, the world of judo will continue to move at full speed. From 3rd to 9th November, France will host over 3,000 judoka for the Paris Veteran and Kata World Championships, both of which are expected to break participation records. During the same period, we will also follow the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh featuring individual and mixed team events. The World Judo Tour will resume in mid-November with the Zagreb Grand Prix, followed by the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam and finally the prestigious Tokyo Grand Slam in December.
Thank you for following the action and sharing every emotion with us. A huge thank you to Mexico too, for three wonderful days of judo, for your warmth, the colour and hospitality.
