With the fifth day of competition at the OTP Bank World Judo Championships Hungary, the second half of the competition began. Two Japanese judoka were crowned, bringing the number of titles won by Japan to six, so far.

There were many contenders for the world titles this morning and it took all day for the final standings to begin to take shape. Sanshiro Murao in the men's category and Shiho Tanaka in the women's category sealed their glory, in the -90 kg and -70 kg categories, respectively.

While this result may not have seemed surprising at first glance, there had been a lot of uncertainty at the starting bell as numerous Olympic and world medallists of the recent past were scattered thropugh the draws. Under the spotlights of the Papp Laszlo Arena, judo delivered its quota of shock defeats and incredible wins.

These world championships once again offer us a magnificent spectacle, clearly demonstrating that the event is the culmination of a season that began in early February in Paris. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are not forgotten but they have now been tucked away in the memory drawer, while the present and the future are being written before our eyes.

A new chapter is in preparation starting tomorrow with the -100 kg and -78 kg. Follow all the action at https://judotv.com/
