In Colombia, judo is much more than a sport, it is a tool for social and educational transformation. Through the EDI programme, Escuelas Deportivas Integrales de Judo (Comprehensive Judo Sports Schools), the Colombian Judo Federation (FECOLJUDO) introduces judo to schools across the country, instilling values, self-control and fraternity from childhood.

Today, the programme is active in 14 dojos, with more than 500 children training for the life ahead of them. For FECOLJUDO, judo is not only about competitive performance, it is about expanding its impact as a discipline that shapes people, guiding them towards responsibility, discipline and resilience.

The implementation of the Judo in Schools project associated with the Judo for Peace philosophy in Colombia is a remarkable opportunity to strengthen small dojos emerging within educational institutions. These spaces provide a safe and constructive alternative for free time, seeing judo as a formative sport that teaches respect, teamwork, mental discipline, sportsmanship, and personal growth, values that apply both on and off the tatami.

Most beneficiaries are children and young people living in vulnerable circumstances, often exposed to substance abuse, gangs, domestic violence or recruitment by organised criminal groups. It is here that the Judo for Peace approach proves to be an essential strategy for protecting children from these challenges, those that have marked Colombia’s history.

These initiatives, led by leagues, clubs, social and sports organisations and schools, under the leadership of FECOLJUDO, seek vital support to continue. Many groups manage with scarce resources and inadequate facilities which limit their impact.

With proper backing, dojos can be strengthened through teacher training and essential equipment provision, including tatami, judogi and motor skills materials. Such resources would not only ensure safe practice spaces but also motivate children to attend regularly. Beyond training, they will gain friendships, support networks and, for the most talented, a path towards improving their quality of life and shaping a meaningful future through judo.

At its heart, the mission is simple yet profound: to offer young people the chance to see and live life differently. Judo provides them with a choice, a way out of violence and vulnerability and a way into resilience, community and hope.

That is why Judo in Schools and Judo for Peace have become essential pillars for Colombia’s future. Equipment will not only inspire participation but also help to build identity, strengthen character and empower children to say a resounding NO: no to war, no to abuse, no to despair!
