A minute of silence was observed before the start of the competitions

The news of the earthquake that shook Morocco last night has left us all profoundly saddened. As the African judo family comes together to celebrate our sport and showcase the incredible talent and dedication of our athletes, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the unpredictable forces of nature always around us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragic event.

We mourn the lives that were tragically cut short and extend our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones. Our hearts go out to the injured and we hope for their speedy recovery and the strength to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

At times like these, it becomes evident that the true strength of a community lies in its unity and compassion. The whole judo family is committed to standing hand in hand with Morocco as we navigate the difficult aftermath of this natural disaster. We offer our unwavering support, both in spirit and through various avenues of assistance, to help alleviate the suffering and provide solace to those affected.

Judo, as a martial art and a way of life, instills values of respect, discipline and perseverance. It is during moments of adversity that these values shine brightest. Let this be a time for the African judo family to come together and demonstrate the power of unity. Through our collective efforts, we can provide support to the people of Morocco, offering comfort, strength and a sense of hope in the face of despair.

The President of the African Judo Union, Mr Randrianasolo-Niaiko Siteny, said, "We encourage all members of the African Judo Union and the wider judo community to extend their support to the people of Morocco in any way possible, whether through relief efforts, raising awareness, or demonstrating acts of kindness and solidarity. Let us embody the spirit of judo, reaching out to those in need and showing compassion to our fellow human beings.

As we mourn the lives lost, let us also celebrate the indomitable spirit of the Moroccan people. Their resilience and determination will guide them through this dark hour towards a brighter future. Together we shall emerge stronger from the shadows of this tragedy, reinforcing the bonds that unite us as a continent.

On behalf of the African Judo Union, we offer our deepest condolences to the people of Morocco, assuring them that they are not alone in their grief. May our collective support bring comfort and healing to the hearts and the land that have been affected by this devastating earthquake."
