The objective is clear: to create an environment where performance depends solely on the qualities of the judoka. For a continental championship of that level, the responsibility rests with the African Judo Union and the local organising committee, whose work began weeks before the competition. Logistics, scheduling, transport, accommodation and competition management must align perfectly to guarantee a smooth event.
This effort continues throughout the competition itself. Every detail is monitored so that each bout reflects only the athletes’ skills, determination and preparation. Yet beyond this essential know-how, there is another dimension that is just as important, that of making the event visible to the world.
In recent years, the African Judo Union has taken a major step forward by building a dedicated media team whose mission it is to highlight athlete performances. Their work is largely invisible, yet it is precisely what allows the sport to be seen. Without them, no audience would be able to follow the competition, celebrate victories or share the emotion of the moment.
The team includes photographers, cameramen, IT specialists, protocol and administrative staff, all working under the leadership of Estony Pridgeon, Secretary General of the African Judo Union and a member of the IJF Executive Committee, following the vision of President Siteni Randrianasoloniaiko for the development of judo accross the continent.
“They are the driving force behind the competition,” she explains. “I am proud to see how far we have come over the past ten years, reaching international standards. It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated team.”
To witness them in action is to understand their commitment. No-one counts the hours. Everyone gives more than yesterday and strives to give even more tomorrow. What drives them is not simply the desire to do well but the determination to improve constantly.
Thanks to their efforts, African judo has entered a new era. Through strong co-operation with the International Judo Federation and platforms such as JudoTV, continental events can now be followed live worldwide. The reach of African judo continues to grow, connecting athletes and fans across the globe.
At the same time, areas such as protocol and event presentation have progressed significantly, ensuring that every participant feels welcomed and respected.
This is a tribute to those who work behind the scenes so that others may shine. In Nairobi, African judo is not only growing stronger, it is becoming more visible, more professional and more united, thanks to the dedication of its unsung heroes.
