It has been an intense start to the year for the Judo for Peace South Africa programme which continues to grow at a high pace. JFPSA is a programme funded by the International Judo Federation in collaboration with UNHCR. The focus of the programme is to use judo as a platform for communities to meet, collaborate and contribute to the social cohesion, youth and gender empowerment, and child protection of both local and refugee communities in South Africa.

The main partners are Nike, Three2six, Future Families, Grassroots Soccer and Judo South Africa. As for today, activities are present in Johannesburg with 7 clubs and 5 schools, whereas other satellite clubs are in Durban and Cape Town.

As the year began, everyone was excited, with new goals and new ideas. At the end of January we announced the programme’s first black belts (Click here). "More recently, we managed to introduce judo to the Sky College in Honeydew. The event was successful. Thanks to the children, teachers and parents for making it such a huge success. Another school is another win,” said Roberto Orlando, who leads the programme.

Back in 2020, some judoka participated in the SAYes Mentoring programme in partnership with Nike. It had a profound impact on them. This year again several judoka participated in the activities and there is hope that it will have the same positive outcome for them.

Judo started on a high note in Soweto as well as the Shapa Nike Centre announced that the dojo will finally move there permanently. "This is a great achievement for us,” said Orlando.

Last but not least, judogi funded by the Italtile Foundation at Matlhasedi P.School, were offered to the project and put a big smile on everyone's face. These achievements and this progress already highlights the future dreams for Judo for Peace South Africa, which are: Get the Judo for Peace coaches to run the gym at the Brixton Centre and build a slab for Judo for Peace at Matlhasedi.

Step by step the programme is gaining more momentum. Stay connected for more information soon.
