The Saudi capital city of Riyadh was the stage for a remarkable celebration of sport and friendship as the Ambassador of Japan Judo Cup 2025 for Youth concluded at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Indoor Hall. Over two vibrant days (3rd and 4th October), the event, hosted by the Saudi Judo Federation, brought together the spirit of judo, cultural exchange and the enduring bond between Saudi Arabia and Japan.

A Celebration of Sport and Diplomacy

Organised to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, the tournament stood as a powerful symbol of mutual respect and co-operation. It demonstrated how sport and particularly judo can bridge cultures and strengthen ties through shared values of discipline, respect and mutual welfare.

The event took place under the leadership and close supervision of Dr Abdulaziz Al-Bassam, Chair of the Saudi Judo Federation’s Board of Directors. Among the distinguished guests were H.E. Mr Yasunari Moreno, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom, accompanied by his wife, and Mr Salem Al-Johar, vice chair of the federation. Their presence reflected the depth of commitment to the continued development of judo in Saudi Arabia.

Across 16 youth weight categories for boys and girls, the tournament showcased technical excellence, determination and sportsmanship. The athletes’ performances reflected months of hard work by clubs nationwide, signalling a new generation of Saudi judoka ready to take their place on the international stage. The atmosphere in the arena was electric, with families, coaches and fans cheering passionately as each bout unfolded. Every throw, hold-down and victory was a testament to the growing strength of Saudi judo and the success of the federation’s youth development initiatives.

The Ambassador’s Cup was made possible thanks to the support of valued partners including the NEC Corporation, Centrum, Nadec and Mirror Productions. Their contributions enhanced the quality and visibility of the event, ensuring a memorable experience for all participants.

A World-Class Masterclass

In parallel with the competition and as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations, the Saudi Judo Federation, in collaboration with the All Japan Judo Federation and the Embassy of Japan, hosted a world-class judo masterclass in Riyadh. More than 200 young athletes from across the Kingdom took part, training directly under the guidance of two of Japan’s most celebrated champions: Joshiro Maruyama, two-time world champion (-66 kg), and Natsumi Tsunoda, Olympic and three-time world champion (-48 kg).

The sessions included dynamic demonstrations, interactive drills and an inspiring ‘Dream Match,’ where local athletes shared the tatami with the masters. The event concluded with a lively Q&A session that captured the enthusiasm and curiosity of the participants.

Building the Future of Saudi Judo

Attended by Mr Osama Salem, CEO of the federation, the masterclass underlined the federation’s long-term vision to nurture youth, elevate local expertise and create international exposure for Saudi athletes. This landmark initiative embodied the core principles of judo, Jita Kyoei (mutual welfare and benefit) and Seiryoku Zenyo (maximum efficiency with minimum effort), aligning perfectly with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to foster a globally competitive and culturally vibrant sports ecosystem.

As the Ambassador of Japan Judo Cup 2025 came to a close, it left behind more than medals and victories. It strengthened friendships, inspired youth and reaffirmed judo’s power to unite people across nations.
