For Stéphane Nomis, President of France Judo and a member of the IJF Executive Committee, the emotion was tangible, “We are extremely proud that Expo 2025 Osaka has welcomed us to promote judo. For us, Japan is the birthplace of judo and this Franco-Japanese friendship from the very beginning is simply incredible. To promote judo here in Japan, on behalf of France, is magical.”
More than just a sport, judo is above all a school of life, “It is also the embodiment of the moral code of judo. Judo is often seen on television, particularly during the Olympic Games. We experienced an extraordinary Games in Tokyo, though without spectators, and then an unforgettable Games in Paris with a truly electric crowd. But here in Osaka, we were here for culture. Judo is also about culture, about education. It was important for us to be there. We were the only sport represented at the Expo and it was in the France Pavilion.”
The Greatest Champions United
Never before had so many legends shared the same tatami. Alongside Teddy Riner and Clarisse Agbegnenou, Japanese champions such as Ryoko Tani, Tadahiro Nomura and Kosei Inoue joined the event.
“We had the five greatest champions in world judo, five legends, the very best of the best; they were here with us. It was unique to be able to pass this on to the children,” enthused Stéphane Nomis.
At the heart of the day, however, were the children. Through activities and demonstrations, young participants had the chance to immerse themselves in the world of judo alongside their idols. Even Kodomo, the France Judo mascot, was part of the celebration, embodying joy and education for the youngest participants.
“Champions want to pass something on. They love the values, they love the children, they love sharing and they embody these values. Judo raises children, helps them grow, it changes lives. Here at Expo Osaka, this was the best moment to show it.”
A Message of Unity
On the tatami, the French and Japanese were no longer separated by nationality, they were simply judoka, sharing the same passion. As Teddy Riner summed up, “Together with my fellow judoka, from both countries, we shared an intense moment on the tatami. Let us fully enjoy this moment of sharing and unity.”
Kosei Inoue echoed this spirit with a message that resonated deeply, “It was a true privilege to participate in this event with the French judo family and honoured champions. Our collaboration was dedicated to the values of judo, showing that the human connections and skills developed on the tatami go far beyond sport, they create champions of life. As a lifelong judoka, I see it as my mission to carry this spirit forward and share it with the world.”
Through this exceptional day, judo asserted itself as far more than a sport: a universal language, a bridge between cultures and a source of inspiration for future generations.
