Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist Gemma HOWELL (GBR) bested two-time world medallist Maria BERNABEU (ESP) to win her first IJF World Judo Tour title. HOWELL has now put pressure on her -70kg teammate and Olympic bronze medallist Sally CONWAY (GBR) in the race for the one place for Tokyo 2020, after throwing powerful Spaniard BERNABEU for a waza-ari and then pinning her with a sankaku-gatame to clinch gold. Wolverhampton Judo Club product HOWELL rushed to the stands to celebrate with her mother who said in the break that she would win because she’s her darling daughter.

In the first semi-final BERNABEU conquered Antalya Grand Prix winner Elisavet TELTSIDOU (GRE) by ippon while in the second semi-final HOWELL usurped former world number one Maria PORTELA (BRA) by the maximum score.

The first bronze medal was awarded to former world number one Kelita ZUPANCIC (CAN) who marginally outworked PORTELA. Brazil’s number one in the -70kg category received her marching orders after accumulating three penalties.

The Hague Grand Prix silver medallist Akil GJAKOVA (KOS) captured Kosovo’s third gold medal in Budapest but the first of the golden variety after a faultless display on day two. GJAKOVA threw 20-year-old Orenburg European Cup winner Georgii ELBAKIEV (RUS) with a sumptuous sasae-tsurikomi-ashi for his second score to seal gold while ELBAKIEV will not be too disappointed having announced his arrival on the international stage with his first IJF World Judo Tour medal.

In the first semi-final ELBAKIEV powered past Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist Telman VALIYEV (AZE) by ippon while GJAKOVA profied from an insipid display by Asian-Pacific Championships bronze medallist Khikmatillokh TURAEV (UZB) who has disqualified after receiving three penalties.
