The most experienced judoka in the Commonwealth lit up the third day of the Commonwealth Championships in the Midlands as judoka aged 30 years and over up to their 70s were given their chance to shine.

The backbone of every judo club, every community and a fountain of knowledge who pass on their expertise to generation after generation, veteran judoka epitomise the sport’s code of judo for all.

England were once again at the forefront as they went three-for-three in the women’s youngest age group of F1 as Nicola Grange (-63kg), Kylie Adams (-70kg), Danielle Batt (-78) all took gold.

Wales (Ashley Amos) and South Africa (Petrus Louis Nolte and Allerdyce Colin Fulton) broke England’s resistance in the M1 categories while Northern Ireland (Gavin McNeill) claimed gold in the M2 age group.

New Zealand clinched gold through Mike Sexton (M4 -81) while Australia’s Luc Tournier (M4 -66) added to the southern hemisphere’s golden medal tally.

England’s and British Judo’s own Kerry Tansey (F5 +78), who was part of the organising committee’s event staff on day’s one and two, donned her judogi and was one of the most popular winners of the competition so far as she beat English and Indian opposition.
